DEMONS & LAKES

01. A Devil’s Coming
We got miles to go before we reach the head of the shore,
And these figures crouching in shadows are twitching in time to my pulse.
We’ve gotta make clear to them that they can’t hurt us on my time;
On my watch, and – they can’t hear what we think, they can’t control us on my land -
 in my world! Singing o-oo-ooooooooo
Lost in provinces of wild-eyed inhabitants that have all been calling your name and
I thought you’d help me (at least admit you know me) but, I see I’ve made a mistake…
Cause…
You are the liars I know, you are the liars I know – you’re getting into my head, confusing everything and – you are the liars I know, you are the liars that I’ve seen,
that I’ve loved! And now, you made a liar of me, you made a liar of them
we’re messing everything up, we’re fucking everything up
you made a liar of me, you made a liar of them!
The devil’s marching up! The devil’s coming for us – singing o-ooo-oooooooooo.

02. In the World
I’ve got a silver bullet with your name engraved right on it
and I know just how…. to find you.
Your guns, your money’s taken many lives, in the world, in the world.
Revenge, and murder’s marching through the night – to your door, to your door…
I’ve got a silver bullet with your name engraved right on it
and I know just how…. to find you.
The dancing lights of the fire are reflected in the dark staring blank eyes of a shark
that’s always moving closer – No – that’s close enough!
And he swims, swims farther each time, trying to find a peaceful life to live
and fight for from time to time, moving from his birth until he is dead.
The time has come to meet you where you stand, in the world, in the world.
My friends, my neighbors – call to everyone (!) that you know, that you know.
Oo-oooo-ooooo-oooooo we will fall, we will fall
Oooooooooooooooooooo this I know, that I know…

03. Demons and Lakes
You’ve got everything that you want,
everything’s been handed straight to you on a silver spoon.
You’ve got everything that you want, everything that you need, and please –
Don’t take this the wrong way but- I want you to have- I want you to have a terrible life.
Our blood is American soil; our blood is American soil that all your dreams are buried in.
You must be patient, yeah, you best be patient, or you’ll see
darkness pour right in to come and meet ya. Darkness poured right in…
I woke up, I woke up – at the bottom of a lake…
I woke up, I woke up – at the bottom of a lake, with spirits and demons to guide my way.
Your life couldn’t get much brighter; everyone is so nice, so proud, so in love with you.
You’d say that you didn’t ask for this at all and that’s fine, that’s alright,
don’t take this to heart but still- I want you to have- I want you to have a terrible life.
Darkness poured right in to come and meet me. Darkness poured right in…and
I woke up, I woke up – at the bottom of a lake…

04. Simple Fates
Dogs – running up and chasing all the little things -
with simple lives, simple plans, simple fates…
They never spoke a word
Of
Unfair treatment, protest or complaints; never tried to get out of their simple fates.
They never spoke a word…
Ooooooo-ooooooo-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o
I hear, I see, the spirit of the north is calling through the woods!
Our homes, our lives, are crumbling down in spite of all we’ve done to save them.
Long term plans – we’ve been dreaming up
bank accounts, safe investments and big ideas, we’ll forget about
Woo-o-o-o-o-o-o-o
Simple lives…

05. They Ran
Crawling on their knees in the sand and in the dark, the water’s near,
Their bodies floating on the waves – past little sharks…
Wooo-o-wo-o-wo-oo-o-o-o-o-o
We see, we go where the sun and the light shone.
We swam for the shore, where the light still goes, still goes.
We camp on the shore, while the dark starts to knock on our doors.
Lets see whose all in charge so we can meet them, shake their hands and
play the parts of loyal peasants who would never dream of dissent, write of revolt – alright!
They ran…
Wooo-o-wo-o-wo-oo-o-o-o-o-o
They ran to the road…they ran to the road…
They ran to the road that led to the coast.

06. Gray Eyes
Lies inc. running through our heads at night and lies inc. convincing us that we can’t fight
their system; oh…it’s hopeless.
Couldn’t ever rise up ‘cause there’s too much to lose
would a little hope help turn those gray eyes blue – a second? Just one second…
We’ll build a boat with the ruins of this city that we used to live in; we used to care about
And when it’s finished we can all launch it through the Ballard locks
And go any old place; west, north or south.
Yeah I can see it now…
If I lose my life someday along on the ride,
will you promise just to keep my memory alive through music and stories?
Wo-ooo wo-ooo wo-ooo wo-ooo wo-ooo woooooooo!

07. People in High Places
We’re pulling hard, we’re on both sides – as if we have a reason why
We’re going out, we’re coming in, we’re reaching out – it’s stretching thin
It’s not long until it snaps! Snaps! Snaps!
They tap the lines, they listen in, they’re doing everything they can
to keep us safe, to hold us dear, to shelter us from what we fear.
Our countries, our fathers, yeah yeah yeah yeah
Our sisters, our daughters, oh, oh, oh, oh.
Give up – don’t try. Last chance, last fight.
You’ll go, they’ll come
I’ll hide – I’ll run…
One side signs the bills and controls all the cash, wealthy people living powerful lives.
Other side is calling for revolution, they say “there is no choice; it is the only way!”
One side signs the bills and controls all the cash: wealthy people!
Everyday we’re searching for trust in the eyes of our senators, of our generals…
or the people will rise up!
Our countries, our fathers, yeah yeah yeah yeah
Our sisters, our daughters, oh, oh, oh, oh.
We’ve got people situated in high places now!

08. Intermission
Wake up man, we’ve got something to tell you…

09. Careful Where You Are
Losing track of all the paths you started hiking on
Much too late to stop and wait for any help to come…
So careful where you wander out; careful not to lose your way.
Don’t fight it – it only makes things worse, it only…
Watch yourself – no matter where you go, no matter…
Careful where you are.
Left for dead, your friends just said, “It was his time to go”
Some were real, and other fake – I guess we’ll never know,
so careful how you pick your battles…

10. Ghosts
Leaving your land that you’ll never see again alive; this ain’t no fair trade – no.
After the blast comes and poisons everything you love; your history, spirits – gone.
My love was one of the first to go. Now I’m fighting this one on my own.
My boy was one of the first to go. Now I’m fighting this one…
Out of sorts, out of line, running out – out of time
Far from the quiet life, starting wars, picking fights.
Remember what they said: just save your own and don’t look back again
Just look ahead – straight as an arrow, straight as an arrow.
Don’t hear their pleas, their screams, they might as well be ghosts…
Remember, remember
Don’t hear their pleas, their screams, we might as well be ghosts…
Remember, remember…
People I know, people you know, makes no difference where they come from,
when they’ll go or if they’ll stay; I think I’ll check out any day now
Leave your life yeah forget names
remember all the rough times, trouble -
can’t find you if you get moving
out of town, out of state, out of here: leave this place.

11. An Atoll
There is a little village that I saw in the middle of the ocean.
People – living good and living right; they’re just taking walks and having talks
through the days and nights…
Waking up in the middle of the night – you’ll hold the spear and I’ll be shining the light.
Little lanterns on the ocean side, floating down a star lit trail in the dead of the night…
They shared every last thing that they had, so we shared our lives together -
through the good and bad.
I had many laughs and even fights – I had parents, friends and relatives
on that little island.
I remember a little girl that died, went to her funeral – her relatives were right by her side.
Playing music in my old classroom;
students sneaking outta their dorms just to catch a tune.
Gotta keep the little kids in school
to learn about the politics of old men, guns and rich fools…

12. The Road
Deathbed…I made a deathbed out of piles of leaves
Deep in the forest where no one could see – I stumbled off of the road.
I stayed in that exact spot for a month or three; discovered animals I’d never seen
I gained their trust in good time
No I don’t know what happens next; singing – please just give me some rest
We’ve been traveling in this godforsaken land for more years than I care…
I care to recall.
One day…
One day I woke up and they all were gone; I waited for them to come back to me
I waited a damn long time.
Finally, when I decided that there was no hope, I left my deathbed and I found some rope
And did it all over again.
And I hung there for a good year, singing please let me disappear;
But the rope snapped and I crawled on all fours back onto the road…
Back onto the road

13. Goldrush
boy – your wretched life….has always been just fine.
But some doors get opened up, while others you just can’t shut.
Ooooooooooooooooooooo - ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Make them pay; catch their lies and we’ve got them straight
But we don’t know when it’s over… when it’s over….
It was a goldrush
Ooooooooooooooooooo-ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Boy - you don’t know who’s right; so you stay out of this fight
‘cause people won’t stand up to this government
They’re talking big again; they’re standing on their own
They’re shouting out their threats; they’re standing on their own…
And now it’s over…was a gold rush…
Ooooooooooooooooooowooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

14. While the Town was Sleeping
Lost friends pledging to the other side;
it’s just a matter of time before they smoke you out!
I’ve burned all my trusted men for no better reason then suspicion.
It’s quite the grave that we have dug ourselves…
The time is right – now we go
while the town is sleeping.
Headed out, starting slow – then well pick the pace up.
Once you compromise your ways, it’s just a matter a time before you start to change.
I got to see everything we lost; but now that dream is over.
It’s quite the grave that we have dug ourselves.
Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Before you ask for their help boy, remember what you have seen –
cause you can’t trust anybody; no you can’t trust anybody.
Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Before you ask for their help boy, remember what you have seen –
cause you can’t count on anybody; no you can’t count on anybody.
